A Little History

The Airdrie Artist Guild was established in 1988 by Jean Ottosen and Roger Lee. It is a non-profit Society accepting members within the community who enjoy art creation and social atmosphere that encourages art awareness and development. Meetings are held the second and fourth Wednesdays monthly, this year in the Co-op Community Room. Today the club offers the same art enjoyment opportunities as in the past; workshops, demonstrations, lectures, sketch night, video demos and community projects. Art is displayed over the summer in the Airdrie Public Library and at various outlets in town including Smitty's Restaurant.

Ta Da! The Mural - Our Community -

There are lots of insights into the ideas for the mural.
The process started with half a dozen ideas.
First it was each person painting their own idea of Airdrie on various curves along the road. Well when we got the mural board our grey line (that we were supposed to leave in as the connecting path to all the murals) was absolutely straight across, back to the drawing board...so to speak...
The second was to use the Michelangelo painting of Adam (the hands part)  with paint brushes (awesome idea Cheryl) but it fell through when we couldn't decide how to accommodate the path in the middle.?!   Another idea was to show each of the artist members from the back painting the same scene, each airdrie artist in their own style. whatever...
Our next idea transpired when Veronika and Tami and Karen got together and thought a rendition combining many famous paintings that would be full of educational insight for the observer.  Combining  various artists, Seurat, Vermeer, Michelangelo, Van gogh, Bourgeois, Degas, Picasso and DaVinci All into one very interesting work of art. (great idea ladies but who is going to paint that baby!!) And would the  community be interested enough to pick out all the innuendoes???
Next Veronika and Tami were inspired on one very windy Airdrie day and so designed a much easier scene incorporating elements of Airdrie including a few amiss in the final production.
The design painting began at a regular meeting the 2nd Wednesday in May. By Sunday complete!! Now these are photographs from before final touches on the bird...You will have to go down main street to see the finished artwork.
